This is a very rare example of WWII-era US Marine Corps Jungle Suit. Worn from late 1942 onwards, it proved rather unpopular with the Marines and many were cut in half to create makeshift two-piece uniforms. Very few of these survive today.

This one is in a condition of all time. It has some holes throughout and is relatively fatigued. In general, it is still largely intact. 

The History of the USMC Jungle Suit

In mid-1942, the United States Marine Corps began experimenting with camouflage garments designed specifically for jungle warfare in the Pacific. Among the earliest of these developments was a camouflage coverall, now known informally as the USMC jungle suit. This one-piece suit was distinct from later two-piece camouflage uniforms and was specifically engineered for use in the thick, humid, and visually chaotic environment of Pacific island combat.

The jungle suit was constructed from medium-weight, herringbone twill cotton and featured a striking, early war camouflage pattern. This pattern, sometimes called the "frog skin" or "duck hunter" camo, was printed in two tones—one side dominated by greens suited for inland jungle terrain, and the other side with browns for beach or dry terrain. The suit was designed to be reversible, providing a quick and practical way for Marines to switch camouflage schemes depending on their surroundings.

Functionally, the suit had front-zip access, belt loops, and multiple pockets, intended to provide both mobility and utility. It was typically worn over other clothing and was not meant as a direct replacement for standard-issue uniforms. Its streamlined, coverall-style design helped to minimize snagging on underbrush and reduce the silhouette of the wearer in dense foliage.

However, Marine feedback on the jungle suit was mixed. While the concept of camouflage was well received and generally appreciated in theory, the jungle suit itself had practical shortcomings. Many Marines found it hot and uncomfortable in the already sweltering Pacific climate. The one-piece design made it cumbersome during combat or while relieving oneself—an issue that was particularly inconvenient during extended field operations. The suit also lacked ventilation and could become saturated with sweat, contributing to heat exhaustion in some cases.

Another complaint arose from its reversibility. Though innovative, the reversible fabric was not always intuitive in the field. Some Marines wore the suit with the wrong side exposed for the terrain, either out of confusion or lack of clarity on proper usage. Furthermore, because the camouflage pattern was printed directly onto the fabric before assembly, it offered no protection against fading or wear. This meant that the suit's colors often dulled quickly under harsh combat and laundering conditions, reducing its effectiveness.

Despite these drawbacks, the jungle suit represents an important evolutionary step in American military uniform design. It was one of the first serious attempts by the U.S. to equip troops with purpose-built camouflage for a specific environment. Although the Marine Corps eventually moved toward more practical two-piece HBT camouflage uniforms, the jungle suit paved the way for future developments in combat uniform technology.

Today, surviving examples of the USMC jungle suit are rare and highly prized among collectors for their distinctive design and historical significance. They stand as a testament to the Marine Corps’ early efforts to adapt to the demanding realities of Pacific island warfare during World War II.
