Its soldiers trained on skis and climbing ropes at Camp Hale, Colorado, then broke through German defenses in Italy's northern Apennines in 1945. Today the division is headquartered at Fort Drum, New York, and it remains the Army's light infantry specialist for cold weather and rough country. TOPS worked through several rounds of design ideas with 10th Mountain members to build the Mountain Lion, and the result is a blade meant for both hard tactical use and the ordinary chores of life in the field.

TOPS Knives has made its knives in Idaho since 1998, with a design team drawn from the military, law enforcement, and the survival world.

Steel, Grind, and Grip

The blade is quarter-inch 1095 high-carbon steel, hardened to 56-58 HRC and shaped into a recurve drop point with a mid-height saber grind. That grind leaves plenty of steel behind the edge for chopping and prying while still slicing well, and the recurve belly pulls material into the cut. TOPS applies its black traction coating for rust and glare resistance, with a satin swedge on the spine to slim down the tip. The thick spine handles batoning firewood, splitting kindling, and cutting shelter poles, jobs that would snap a thin hunting blade. The recurve edge also makes quick work of rope, tarp cord, and food prep around the fire. One buyer told TOPS he gave his to his daughter as she headed into the Army, and it is a common gift for soldiers, hunters, and anyone assembling a serious survival kit. Keep a light coat of oil on the edge and swedge, since uncoated 1095 will spot with rust if it is put away wet.
