Likely they were produced to alleviate some of the complaints GIs had with the M-51, similar to the later M-65: Namely that they had no hood to protect you from strong winds and rain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEffectively it's a spruced up, gucci version of the M-51.
